March 8 is International Women’s Day, a time to renew our efforts to empower the next generation of women and ensure justice. This is a hugely important issue to April and I. In Congress, I’ve been proud to support the Paycheck Fairness Act, the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, and proud to protect women’s health care.

I believe that a core element of our international agenda should be to improve the status of women around the world, to combat the horrible abuses women endure in many regions. Over the years, April’s taught me so much about these issues through her work to promote healthy media messages for girls.

Big problems remain, domestically and globally, but we can’t lose hope. On International Women’s Day, let’s refocus on the work left to do to leave our daughters and granddaughters a better world.
