Delaney Criticizes Trump Threat to Withdraw Foreign Aid
WASHINGTON – On Monday, President Trump threatened to cut off foreign aid to Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador as a caravan of migrants has reached Mexico with plans to head towards the U.S. border.
Congressman John K. Delaney (MD-6) releases the following statement:
“Withdrawing foreign aid will make conditions in Central America worse, ultimately destabilizing the region and multiplying the number of people fleeing those countries – creating larger caravans in the future. President Trump’s proposed solution, in addition to being inhumane, goes against our own national interest. In the long-term, we need a humane and rational immigration policy that increases border security, creates a path to citizenship for people that are already here and fixes DACA. This is why I support comprehensive immigration reform along the lines of the 2013 bipartisan proposal. I also call on the administration to develop a comprehensive strategy for addressing the conditions on the ground in Central America, which is ultimately the most cost-effective way of solving our issues at the southern border. On immigration, President Trump hasn’t solved problems, he’s created them.”
