FRIENDSHIP HEIGHTS, MD – On February 14, 2018, a gunman opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, killing seventeen students and staff members and injuring seventeen others. On the one-year anniversary of the Parkland tragedy, the country pauses to remember the l7 innocent lives lost in a hail of gunfire. Parkland is the deadliest shooting at a high school in United States history. Following the tragedy last year, John Delaney participated in a Town Hall organized by high school students in Maryland and spoke out in favor of new gun safety legislation. This morning, Delaney posted a Facebook Live commemorating the Parkland tragedy and explaining his views on gun control.

Presidential Candidate John Delaney releases the following statement:

“Today marks the first anniversary of the horrific tragedy in Parkland. On that cruel day, 17 lives were lost and many more were injured in a hail of gunfire. While we mourn the innocent loss of life and stand with the families whose lives were forever altered, we must also demand action and accountability so that no parent, ever again, has to bury their child as a result of gun violence.

“The vigor with which the survivors of Parkland have turned a tragedy into a teachable moment should inspire us all to action. I stand with their calls for common sense gun reforms like universal background checks, a ban on high powered weapons, and red flag laws that would take dangerous weapons out of the hands of domestic abusers and people suffering from mental disorders.

“We need to come together in a bipartisan fashion to tackle our country’s gun crisis. While I would never discourage thoughts and prayers, we all know they won’t solve this problem.  To put an end to this epidemic, we must put politics aside and do what we all know is right. That is the best way that we can honor the lives that were lost a year ago today. God bless the families of Parkland. ”
