Delaney Statement on Midwest Flooding

DES MOINES, IA – In response to the widespread devastating flooding in Iowa and Nebraska this week, precipitated by a “bomb cyclone” weather event coupled with rapid warming and rain, presidential candidate John Delaney issued the following:

“I am deeply saddened to hear of the devastation caused by this week’s flooding in Iowa and Nebraska. Our rural towns and farmers are already struggling, and for too many, this flooding has made a tough time far worse. My heartfelt thanks go to disaster recovery crews and volunteers for their ongoing work to support survivors.

“These recent floods, and the potential future flooding that may come, are a stark reminder of what’s at stake if we ignore climate science. We need to take action on climate change, and we must invest in infrastructure to keep families and communities safe. That’s why I support a bipartisan carbon tax and dividend plan that can pass Congress immediately and cut emissions over 90% coupled with increased investment in energy research and negative emissions technology to get us to net zero emissions by 2050.  In addition, I have a plan to upgrade infrastructure in every region of the United States. 

“Sadly, our current administration lacks the moral compass to see how families are suffering. Last year, Donald Trump took $10 million from FEMA to pay for ICE detentions. And all along, he has denied overwhelming scientific evidence that climate change is real. We need leaders who tell the truth. And the truth is, denying climate science doesn’t make us great – it makes us unprepared.”
